- Between these two areas mean tem- perature in midsummer (July) declines from 18.0~ to about 3.0 ~ C and the duration of the snow free period de- creases from 280 to about 60 days per year. Rhizosphere soils had a pH of 6.5 to 7 at low and about 5 at high altitude. The dry humus fraction was 14% at low and 6% at high elevation.
